Pamphilus (painter)

Pamphilus was a Greek painter from Amphipolis in Macedonia, who lived around 390 BC to 350 BC.

Pamphilus founded with his teacher Eupompos the sikyonische school of painting. He had a thorough scientific education and was also active as a writer.

Known is the rule laid down by him set that painting could not be brought to completion without mathematics and geometry. Who would want to take lessons from him, had to commit to a twelve-year course and a fee of a talent ( equivalent of a sailing vessel ). However, the number of his students was significant, the largest among them Apelles.

From the works of Pamphilus are: the meeting at Phlius, Odysseus on the ship and a family picture.
