Pan-Arab colors

The Pan-Arab colors denote the colors black, red, white and green, which occur in some Arab flags as a common feature.

History

The colors go back originally to the Arab revolution flag from 1916, which was introduced by the King of the Hejaz, Hussein ibn Ali. The colors green, white and black were already three years earlier introduced by Arabs, which take precedence over against Ottoman rule.

The colors black and white are the colors of the Prophet Mohammed, green his favorite color and symbol of the Islamic faith.

In the flag the colors stood for the three Arab dynasties of the Fatimids (green), Umayyad (white) and Abbasid (black). Red was added as the color of the Sherif of Mecca and the Hashemite dynasty of King Hussein himself.

In this flag, the colors had the following interpretation:

  • White: Our deeds
  • Black: Our Fight
  • Green: Our fields
  • Red: Our Swords

Based on this flag was created in Egypt in 1952, the Arab Liberation flag. She has been the formation of the United Arab Republic in 1958 a template for some of the Arab national flags and expresses the independence from the British foreign rule from:

  • Black stands for the years of oppression
  • White symbolizes the bright future
  • Red represents the blood that was shed for the attainment of the objectives in the fight
  • Green ( not present in the original Arab Liberation flag ) is the color of the Prophet, and is usually shown as one or more stars
