Panagiotis Pipinelis

Panagiotis Pipinelis (Greek: Παναγιώτης Πιπινέλης ) ( born March 21, 1899 in Piraeus, † July 20, 1970 ) was a Greek diplomat, politician and Prime Minister.

Pipinelis holds a degree in law and political science at the University of Zurich and from 1920 to 1922 at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg. In 1922, he joined the Diplomatic Corps. In the following years he worked at several embassies. In 1936 he was a staff member of the Embassy in Budapest and then in 1940 at the Embassy in Sofia.

From January to March 1950, he was the first time for a short time foreign minister in the cabinet of Ioannis Theotokis. From 1953 to 1958 he was then Permanent Representative of Greece to NATO. In 1963 he was again Secretary of State.

On June 17, 1963, he was named after the electoral defeat of the National Radical Union ( ERE ) by Konstantinos Karamanlis succeeded him as Prime Minister. During his short tenure to 29 September 1963, he tried unsuccessfully to change the electoral system to enforce in favor of the EUA. In a repeat of the election, however, the opposition Center Union (EK ) by Georgios Papandreou won a vote share of 53 percent. After a transitional government of Stylianos Mavromichalis Papandreou eventually became Prime Minister on 8 November 1963.

After the coup by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos Obrist of 21 April 1967, he was eventually re- Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this office he served the military dictatorship until his death.
