Panait Istrati

Panait Istrati ( born August 22, 1884 in Braila, Romania, † April 16, 1935 in Bucharest ) was a French-language writer of Romanian origin.

His mother was the laundress Joita Istrate, his father was a Greek smuggler.

He grew up in the village near Baldovinesti Brăila, where he spent six years attended primary school, where he remained seated twice. Later, he earned his living as a waiter and as an assistant to a baker's pies. During this time he was a tireless reader. His travels took him to Bucharest, Konstantin Opel, Alexandria, Cairo, Naples, Paris and Switzerland.

In abject poverty alive, sick and lonely, he undertook in 1921 a suicide attempt on the way to Nice, but he was saved. He wrote a letter to Romain Rolland, who answered him immediately. In 1923 his story Kyra Kyralina was published with a foreword by Romain Rolland. Rolland called him in this preface to " Gorky of the Balkans ".

In 1927, he traveled together with Nikos Kazantzakis to Russia and visited Moscow and Kiev. A second trip to the Soviet Union followed in 1929, where he learned the truth about the Stalinist dictatorship. Then he wrote his famous book on the wrong track.

His former communist friends now branded him as "fascists ". He returned sick and broken back to Romania, where he died in 1935 of tuberculosis.
