Panaitan, Bahasa Indonesia: Pulau Panaitan, literally translated Prince Island is the largest island in the Indonesian Sunda Strait on the edge of the Java Sea between Java and Sumatra.

The at the highest elevation 329 m high island located off the extreme western tip of Java with the World Heritage National Park Ujung Kulon, to which it belongs. Like the nearby island of Krakatoa is of volcanic origin. Eruptions in historical time are not known. The name of Prince Island is because it was considered the property of Javanese prince. Administratively, it belongs to the government district Pandeglang in Banten province.

Panaitan did not suffer so severely from the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, like many other islands in the region, only the north and parts of the East were affected by tsunamis; later they found 55 corpses. These include a Hajj with the royal permission were to logging and about 50 settlers.

Panaitan is hilly, passed with forest and has a rich wildlife: deer, wild boar, monkeys, snakes ( pythons ) and birds. There are several species of freshwater crocodiles and giant lizards occur. On the mountain Raksaa ancient Hindu sculptures were found. The coastal region offers sandy beaches and coral reefs.
