Pangkor Island

Pulau Pangkor (formerly Dinding ) is an important for tourism island with its tropical sandy beaches. It belongs to the Malaysian state of Perak.

Geography

The island is located in the Strait of Malacca on the west coast of Malaysia. It is 12 km long and 4 km wide, about 22 km ² in size and surrounded by several small islands, with Pulau Pangor According to the southwest is the largest. The almost inaccessible mountainous interior is home to the hornbill and partly still covered with jungle. The highest point is Mount Bukit Pangkor with 371 meters. The western part of the island is developed for tourists with bungalow settlements. To the northwest is the national Pangkor Iceland Airport.

History

The Dutch East India Company has built in 1680ern in the south of the island an armed fort ( Kota Belanda ), but in 1690 after attacks locals have to temporarily leave in order to protect the Dutch tin trade in the area from pirate raids. In 1743 it was rebuilt and housed 600 Dutch soldiers. Five years later, in 1748, we gave it up.

On January 20, 1874, signed Sir Andrew Clarke and Raja Abdullah here the Treaty of Pangkor, the area became part of the Federated Malay States. This agreement had a decisive impact on the historical development of Malaysia.

Resident

On the island about 20,000 Malay, Chinese and Indian people live in several small villages, called kampungs. The main town of Kampung Pangkor is equipped with a post office, bank and ferry to Lumut on the mainland.

The inhabitants are known for their " Fischsatay " ( Ikan Bilis ) of salted small fish, which are dried in the sun. The wooden huts of the fishermen from Kampung Sungai Pinang Kecil and Kampung Sungai Pinang Bensar are also built on stilts into the sea and connected by wooden planks to the mainland.

Tourism

Tourism is the main source of income for the island. Area attractions include the Dutch fort, the Fu Ling Kong Temple, the temple Pathirakaliaman, the jungle in the interior of the island and different beaches.
