Panglao (Bohol)

Panglao is a Philippine municipality in the province of Bohol. It is next to Dauis one of two communities on the island of the same Panglao, has 28 603 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ) and is the southernmost municipality of Bohol.

The name of Panglao goes back to the Spaniards who named the place after the word mapanglao what that meant as much as lonely place in the local dialect. After the Battle of Mactan in 1521, when their leader Ferdinand Magellan was killed, the remaining Spaniards sought refuge on the island of Panglao. Since on Mactan died 27 Spaniards and the team now was too small to serve all three major vessels, the Spaniards burned off the coast Panglaos the Concepción before subsequently sailed with the remaining two ships in the direction of Borneo.

Attractions

Main attractions in Panglao are the white sandy beaches along the coast. Here, there are numerous hotels and beach resorts such as Alona Beach, Bohol Beach Club, Danao Beach, Dumaluan Beach, and others. The beaches of Panglao will also, inter alia, used as the starting point for boat trips, about to Virgin Iceland, and are very popular with divers.

As a building worth seeing the San Agustin Church of Panglao is mentioned. Started in 1894, the construction dragged out over many years. On 31 August 1924, the church was still not completely finished, officially inaugurated. The located on the church portico and bell tower were added later, but adapt to the original architectural character of the Church.
