Panhard PL 17 (1st series)

The Panhard PL 17 was launched on 29 June 1959 as a successor to the model Dyna Z on the market and produced until 1965. The car was an evolution of its predecessor, but still had a streamlined body on.

Model Name

The "PL " stand for " Panhard & Levassor " ( as the company was called until 1945) and should radiate a similar elegance as the "DS" from Citroen. The "17" represents the sum of 5 CV ( French tax -PS), 6 seats and 6 l / 100 km ( fuel consumption ) dar.

From 1964, the "PL" was omitted. This coincides approximately with the acquisition of the car production of Panhard by Citroën.

Specifications

The car took the engine of his predecessor Dyna Z with 851 cc displacement and 42 hp ( 31 kW ). The model " Tigre " had 50 hp ( 37 kW). The engine had two cylinders horizontally opposed, and were connected to the rear of the transmission and the front two exhaust pipes. From model year 1964 ( ie from July 1963), the displacement decreased to 848 cc and the power increased to 50 hp ( 37 kW ) or 60 hp ( 44 kW ) for the " Tigre ".

The front wheels were driven by a four-speed transmission with column shift and synchronization in the aisles 2-4.

The standard version weighed about 805 kg, 830 kg of Tigre. This low weight together with the aerodynamic shape ( drag coefficient about 0.26 ) provided a top speed of 130 km / h for the standard version and 145 km / h for the Tigre.

The front wheels were suspended on two transverse leaf springs, the rear wheels with a rigid drawbar axis of longitudinal struts with three torsion bars on each side.

It was possible to expand the back seat, so that the already large trunk could be further increased with 527 l. Gave so much space there from 1964, when the spare tire was relocated from the trunk under the hood where it fits over the air filter. This was possible because the wheels had no hub - this was made from aluminum brake drums, who had to fix the rims " ears".
