Panjin

Panjin (盘锦 市, Panjin Shi ) is a prefecture -level city in northeast China's Liaoning Province. It has an area of 4084.18 km ² and 1.3 million inhabitants ( end of 2009). Panjin is located in the south of the province in the lower reaches of the Liao He. The city and the surrounding area is dominated by the petrochemical industry.

At county level, Panjin is made up of two districts and two counties. These are:

  • City Xinglongtai (兴隆 台 区), 194 km ², approximately 380,000 inhabitants, the seat of the city government;
  • Municipality Shuangtaizi (双 台子 区), 62 km ², about 190,000 inhabitants;
  • Circle Dawa (大洼县), 1683 km ², 390,000 inhabitants;
  • Circle Panshan (盘山县), 2145 km ², 290,000 inhabitants.

Since September 2012 Panjin throughout China has become the symbol for a national grievance: Millions of Chinese people have been or are forced off their land because the government is building new roads or buildings there. A property owner doused himself in petrol and threatened self-immolation; the vice police chief of Panjin shot him.
