Paolo Mazza

Paolo Mazza (* 1901 in Vigarano Mainarda (FE), † December 31 1981 in Ferrara ) was an Italian football coach and football official. According to him, the Stadio Paolo Mazza is named in Ferrara.

Life

Youth

Mazza was born in about 9 km west of Ferrara place located Vigarano Mainarda, but moved early to Porto Maggiore, where he trained as an electrician and also very successful at local club AS Portuense worked in lower leagues.

Time at SPAL

First, he coached the team of SPAL 1936/37, after the descent into third-rate Series C and reached there in third place. 1937/38, he was engaged in Molin Molin at Ella Ella Calcio 1911, the following season 1938/39 he spent as a coach his old team AS Portuense. In 1939 he returned for three years to SPAL, with whom he reached the 6th, 5th and second place in the third-tier Serie C. After the Second World War he was first Sports Director and 1946 President of SPAL, which since 1946 played under his leadership in Serie B and rose up in 1951 to the Serie A and there 16 seasons spent ( 1951-1964 and 1965-1968 ). After the but -time descent into C. series followed in 1973, the club went back up to the B series. 1976 Mazza resigned as president of the association. The stadium was renamed in honor SPAL at Stadio Paolo Mazza him a year after his death.

Italian national team coach

On 5 May 1962, he took over together with Giovanni Ferrari, the Italian national football team, to train them in the Football World Cup 1962 in Chile. The most famous game of the Italians at this World Cup was the Battle of Santiago against Chile. His record as a coach were in five games with three wins, one draw and one defeat. After the World Cup he was replaced by Edmondo Fabbri.
