Il Memoriale

" Memorials " struck with his first novel the previously known only as a poet Paolo Volponi in 1962 with great success the way a novelist one. His first work shows the complex social upheavals that brought the boom economico the postwar period for the working population in Italy with him, from the perspective of mentally and physically ill people from the province. The protagonist is a lonely and traumatized by war man who accepts hopefully the location of an assembly worker in a metal factory in the Piedmont Canavese. One man's fate of this small, naive factory worker is representative of the great expectations and hopes in the Italian population, which were fueled by the economic boom of the postwar years in some way. That the radical transformation from a largely agrarian structured state to a modern industrial nation not only prosperity and wealth, but also massive social problems brought with him, which concerned the rural areas especially, is represented quite strongly in Memoriale.

Volponi shows the generally perceived as positive in the postwar years of industrialization in part from a very critical perspective. Especially the impersonal bureaucracy that cold rationality and the often opaque for the hapless workers hierarchies of neoindustriellen working world are at the center of the novel, the essence, characteristics and " logic" of factory -rayed minutely, while many of their contradictory mechanisms into question. The culturally strong normative force of the emerging consumer and industrial society and the social impact of the associated processes of globalization are addressed by it.

A recurrent topos in Memoriale is the alienazione, alienation. This marks the lives of people as that of the unfortunate protagonists albino. People like him, who can not adapt to the new living conditions due to the unnatural and impersonal environment within the factory are doomed to failure in such an environment. His own failure is logged by Albino in a fictional memoir, which is the novel is based.
