James Brown played Papa 's Got a Brand New Bag in February 1965 with the James Brown Band. The most famous member of this band was Maceo Parker ( saxophone), his brother Melvin played drums. Brown himself was involved as a writer, singer and producer. The song was recorded at Arthur Smith Studios ( Charlotte, North Carolina) is an ideal stopover on the way to a gig. The original version is just under seven minutes; the recording lasted for less than one hour.

Papa 's Got a Brand New Bag was first published in July 1965 by the King label. For the original version was first accelerated and then divided into two parts: on the A- side of the single is Part 1 ( 1:55 ) Part 2 on the B- side ( 2:12 ). Both parts were published in the same year on a same album. Meanwhile, the song is also appeared on numerous compilations.
