Papa Charlie Jackson

Papa Charlie Jackson ( * 1885 in New Orleans, † 1938 in Chicago) was an early American blues musician. He played a banjo - guitar and the ukulele. His first recordings were made in 1924. The details of his life are mostly obscure, but he is probably born around 1885 in New Orleans and died in Chicago in 1938.

Jackson came in the early 1920s in medicine shows on around Chicago. His recordings Papa's Lawdy Lawdy Blues and Airy Man Blues ( Paramount August 1924 ) were the first recordings of a male blues performer. His most successful piece is likely to be Salty Dog Blues ( Paramount in mid 1926). He also made recordings with Ida Cox, Hattie McDaniel and Ma Rainey.

In the late 1920s, his popularity reached its peak. With Blind Blake he took Papa Charlie and Blind Blake Talk About It on ( a piece in two parts ). Later, Jackson moved from Paramount to Okeh Records and made with Big Bill Broonzy recordings which were never published.
