Papal conclave, 1294

The conclave of 1294 was held from December 24, 1294 23. It had become necessary after Pope Celestine V resigned ten days previously by the Office.

Course

The election began on 23 December 1294th The Cardinals chose first Cardinal Matteo Orsini Rubeo, which, however, did not accept the election. Thus, the participants of the conclave had to proceed to the election again. On Christmas Eve 1294, they finally selected in the third round of voting was Benedetto Caetani, the previously influential adviser of Celestine V.. He called himself as Pope Boniface VIII

This conclave is one of the shortest in history.

Following the resignation of Celestine V. there were 22 cardinals who all took part in the conclave. Twelve were created by Celestine V, five of Nicholas IV, two of Nicholas III. and each was a cardinal by Urban IV, Martin IV and Honorius IV created.
