Papal conclave, 1471

The conclave of 1471 was held from 6th to 9th August 1471, after Pope Paul II died on July 26, 1471.

Conduct of the election

Election capitulations

As in previous conclaves and 1471 such as the move away from nepotism and the convocation of a council were summoned by the Cardinals election promises. The Chosen, Francesco della Rovere, but when Pope Sixtus IV both promise was not complying then: He convened only three months after his election two of his nephews cardinals, a council did not take place during his tenure.

The election of Sixtus IV

The conclave began on August 6 in the Vatican. Three days later, the Franciscan Francesco della Rovere was elected, who called himself Pope Sixtus IV. Cardinal della Rovere was previously known as astute theologian and powerful preacher.
