Papal conclave, 1559

The conclave of 1559 was the election meeting of the Cardinals after the death of Pope Paul IV and lasted from 5 September to 25 December 1559. It was 111 days, the longest conclave of the 16th century. It took place in the Pauline Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican instead.

Papal election

His choice was Giovanni Angelo Medici (1499-1565), who called himself Pope Pius IV.

College of Cardinals

At the time of Wahlkonklaves belonged to the College of Cardinals on 55 cardinals, 47 of which took part in the opening of the conclave. Girolamo Recanati Capodiferro died during the conclave; two had to leave for health reasons, the conclave.
