Papal conclave, 1676

The conclave of 1676 was the election meeting after the death of Pope Clement X. and lasted from August 2, 1676 until September 21 of 1676. Pope Innocent XI chose it.

Participant

After Pope Clement IX. passed away on July 22, 1676, the College of Cardinals counted 67 members. After 44 of them took part in the opening of the conclave, their number rose to 63.

Were created in the Cardinals by:

  • Pope Urban VIII: 7 Cardinals
  • Pope Innocent X: 12 Cardinals
  • Pope Alexander VII: 19 Cardinals
  • Pope Clement IX. 8 Cardinals
  • Pope Clement X: 19 Cardinals

During the conclave the cardinals Virginio Orsini and Carlo Bonelli died

Course

After already in 1672 a list of candidates Pope had been created, was at the time of the conclave only the selected Pope Cardinal Benedetto Odescalchi as papabile.

Already in the first round of voting, on August 3, 1672 Odescalchi received 14 votes. But even if 13 other candidates were still in the race next to him, there were 25 abstentions. Although decreased the number of candidates, but this changed the mood of the Konklaveväter not, the Odescalchi was charged with 8 votes in the 107th ballot, elected on 20 September. The remaining 19 votes were distributed among the cardinals Barberini, Rospigliosi and Alberizzi while contained 30 cardinals her voice.

With the enthronement of the new Pope, on October 4th 1676 ended a see is vacant 75 days.
