Papal conclave, 1878

The conclave of 1878 was held from 18 to 20 February 1878. It had become necessary since Pope Pius IX. after the longest pontificate in history (1846-1878) died on 7 February 1878.

Course

The conclave entered eleven days after the death of Pius IX. together. It was the third conclave after 1513 and 1523, which took place in the Sistine Chapel. Since this conclave the cardinals always met in the Sistine Chapel. In the third ballot on February 20, including the Camerlengo Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci was elected by 44 votes to the Pope. He was not among the papabili, since he was already 68 years old and the Camerlengo is actually chosen as well as never to the Pope before the conclave.

First ballot

Already in the first ballot Cardinal Pecci reached the highest number of votes, while the favorites Alessandro Franchi and Luigi Bilio were clearly inferior.

Second round

Also in the next ballot was Pecci well ahead of the favorite Curia.

Third ballot

In the third ballot Pecci reached by 44 votes ( = 72.13 %) the required two -thirds majority and was thus elected Pope. He called himself Leo XIII. , And his pontificate was to be very important for the church.

Cardinals

After the death of Pius IX. there were 64 cardinals. 61 took part in the conclave. Of the participants, 4 were still by Pope Gregory XVI. (1831-1846) created the remaining 57 of Pius IX. All 61 participating cardinals were Europeans. The only non-European Cardinal ( John McCloskey ) met only one in Rome, as Leo XIII. has already been selected.
