The conclave lasted five days and took 14 ballots to complete.

Participating Cardinals

On the day of Pope Benedict XV. died, there were 60 cardinals. Enrique Almaraz y Santos, Archbishop of Toledo in Spain, had died on the same day as the Pope. Of the 60 Cardinal electors reached three cardinals to the Vatican after the start of the conclave. Four other cardinals had announced their non-attendance due to illness or age, but also because of the distance to Rome. Thus were 53 cardinals to select. Among them were three German and two Austrian.
