Paperback Writer

May 30, 1966

Paperback Writer was the twelfth single by the Beatles. She appeared on 30 May 1966 in the U.S. and on June 10, 1966 in Europe. The B- side of the single is the title of Rain.

Recordings

The recordings for the most part written by Paul McCartney song Paperback Writer took place at Abbey Road Studios on 13 and 14 April 1966. McCartney played in the recordings for the first time a Rickenbacker Bass Model 4,001th When mixing the drums in the stereo spectrum ( toms, snare and cymbals left, center, bass drum right) was divided. Echo effects were placed on the votes. It was the first hit single of the Beatles with the developed at Abbey Road Studios audio effect of the Artificial Double Tracking ( ADT).

A characteristic feature of this piece is the background choir, which testifies to the playfulness and the Zitierfreude of the two composers. Here you used the first verse of the children's song Frère Jacques, who accompanied the main melody harmonically and rhythmically.

Placement

For the first time since She Loves You a Beatles single reached not as they are issued No. 1 on the hit parade, but rose "only" at # 2 and reached a week later the top position. Thus, it was the eleventh single by the group that won first place in hit parade sequence. In the UK, over 500,000 copies were sold of the record, in the United States even more than a million pieces.

In order to promote the sale of the single, specially two movies were filmed. This was the birth of the music video in principle.

Others

The poem Constance Rider by Robert Gernhardt is a parody of the ballad The rider and the Lake of Gustav Schwab, which was written to match the melody and rhyme scheme of Paperback Writer.
