Description

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 57-73 mm. All wings have a black base color. On top of the wing there is a double row of yellow spots that sometimes pass into orange tints and their inner row is made up of significantly larger spots. The hind wings show a bluish spot series between the yellow spots and a reddish, black cored eyespot. Specific type are the short tail with the nature has bestowed the name Short-tailed Swallowtail ( Kurzschwänziger dovetail ) in the English language, which distinguishes them from other, otherwise similar drawing styles and makes them virtually unique. The underside of the hind wing has all the features of the top in the same places, the spots of the series, however, are filled mostly orange.

Egg

The ball-shaped eggs are cream colored and provided with a reddish brown ring on the top. They are laid singly on the leaves of a plant food.

Caterpillar

Younger caterpillars have a brownish color and are provided with some cream-colored spots. They try to protect themselves from predators by this bird droppings - mimesis. Full-grown caterpillars are yellow colored green to bright green and wearing several black horizontal stripes, which are provided with several yellow dots.

Doll

The belt color doll is variable depending on the region of occurrence in all shades between green and black.

Similar Species

Regarding the drawing elements on the wings of Papilio polyxenes is a similar type, but differs by the longer tails on the hind wings and inhabited predominantly eastern, central and southern areas of the USA.

Distribution and habitat

Papilio brevicauda only occurs in some eastern Canadian provinces. The species prefers to live in coastal areas, open spaces, and occasionally in gardens.

Way of life
