The Continental Toy Spaniel ( Epagneul Nain Continental originally ) is recognized by the FCI breed from France and Belgium ( FCI Group 9, Section 9, Standard No. 77). In addition to the race itself, the FCI also referred to the section, belongs to the next of the breed nor the ( provisionally accepted ) Russkiy Toy, named Continental Toy Spaniel.

In the Continental Toy Spaniel breed two varieties are distinguished: the Papillon ( French for butterfly ), remember its large protruding ears in the shape of a butterfly, and the Phalène (French: moth ) showing its ears down. For both varieties CACIB is awarded separately.

Origin and History

Towards the end of the 19th century begins in France and Belgium, the systematic breeding of dwarf spaniels and a pedigree dog arises for the purposes of today's dog breeds. A first breed standard for the Continental Toy Spaniel 1905 is fixed.

Description

The Continental Toy Spaniel is one of up to 28 cm shoulder height and 5 kg to small breeds.

His long, silky coat shall be white in color and has colored his badge. The colors range from maroon on maroon, brown to black, not allowed is liver brown. The red-brown shades can with black hair tips ( as is called sable ) be combined. The badges will be distributed on head and body, must outweigh the white base color to the body. At the head and ears that color is predominant, a white blaze is desired. The coat may have no undercoat. The back is straight, fringed tail is carried bent over him. He has straight, slim legs with good angulation and rabbits' feet. His head should be small and round according to the body size. This, and the expressive eyes creates the baby schema. The almond-shaped eyes are surrounded by a dark border.

The Phalene Papillon differs from only by the shape of the ears, which are to be laterally drooping and flat along the head with him. When puppy is mostly only after several weeks if the ears erect ( Papillon ) or be worn hanging ( Phalene ). Both ear shapes are broad, large and rounded. Erected they look like butterfly wings spread out. You own at the edges, like the tail, fringes and are very mobile / expressive.

The Continental Toy Spaniel is alert, playful, lively, friendly and graceful, yet robust.
