History

The parade ground was in the 17th century as a trading center for animals (including pigs) known as the " Säumärt " ( pig market ). In 1819 the name was changed in Neumarkt, probably partly due to the ongoing economic recovery in the region of Zurich. The name Neumarkt talked about 50 years until it rechristened the place in parade ground. Thus, a reference was made to the nearby armory and ammunition store in the city.

Until the demolition of the walls of the later parade ground was characterized by both the city walls with the Wollishofer Gate and cats tower and the other by the so-called Tiefenhoflinde. Before the city wall ran the old city moat, which was still open and frogs ditch was called. The place was still further enhanced by the construction of the Bahnhofstrasse in 1864, as now, there was a direct connection to the Zurich Main Station and the frogs moat was filled up. This was much to the delight of the confectioner, David Sprüngli, which in 1859 moved its headquarters from the market street to the parade ground, and in one of the recently constructed commercial buildings Tiefenhöfe under the false assumption that the then proposed new station ( reconstruction 1867) would directly on the parade ground be built. That the Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich for splendor and shopping street would be, no one foresaw. The 1857 by Gustav Albert Wegmann ( 1812-1858 ) built complex of sunken courtyards, in the confectionery Sprüngli since then has his place of business, the first step to today's commercial and business place was.
