Parakeratosis

As parakeratosis refers to a disorder of keratinization ( dyskeratosis ), which is characterized by persistence of cell nuclei or nuclear residues in the stratum corneum. It often occurs simultaneously to a thickening of the horny layer ( parakeratotic hyperkeratosis). A parakeratosis caused by the accelerated flow of keratinization or disturbance of the maturation of the keratinocytes.

Typical associated in humans with parakeratosis diseases are psoriasis, eczema, and Bowen's disease.

In dogs, distemper, inflammation, external parasites, dermatophilosis, dermatophytosis, zinc deficiency, chronic arsenic and thallium poisoning and the hepatokutane syndrome can lead to parakeratosis. In dogs and cattle a genetic parakeratosis is described. In pigs is mainly zinc deficiency is important.
