Paraoxon, synonym: E 600, an ester of phosphoric acid (see also: phosphoric acid esters). It is in the synonym to no E-number for the purposes of food additives, but about developing number.
Properties
Paraoxon is a colorless liquid that evaporates easily. It is an active metabolite of parathion and thus also an insecticide. In the liver, as well as in many other tissues paraoxon can be formed by oxidation via several intermediates of parathion. Responsible for this are monooxygenases in the microsomes of the endoplasmic reticulum. Paraoxon inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase irreversibly. High toxicity is due to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, which plays an important role in the central nervous system (CNS) in the body. This paraoxon is a neurotoxin.
