Парканы ( Parkany ) ( in Russian)

Parcani (Russian Парканы / Parkany; Bulgarian Паркани ) is a municipality in Transnistria with approximately 10,500 inhabitants. It is located in Rajon Slobozia, on the eastern side of the river Dniester, between the towns of Bendery and Tiraspol.

Parcani has been inhabited for about 80 % of ethnic Bulgarians. According to some information, it is thus the largest, mostly by Bulgarians inhabited settlement outside Bulgaria.

A trolley bus connects the town with the two neighboring towns of Bendery and Tiraspol. Parcani is part of the agglomeration Tiraspol, Bendery comprising a total of about 350,000 inhabitants.

History

First mention of the town was 1770. 1812 Parcani became part of the Russian Empire. Since the beginning of the 19th century, more and more Bulgarian settlers in the village settled. During the Soviet times, the place was part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since 1992 Parcani part of the de facto independent republic of Transnistria. Since 2008, can be found in the city a monument to the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski.
