History

Excavations indicate a settlement of the area for over 5,000 years. The since the 2nd century BC incoming Romans promoted in the surrounding mines gold, especially in Castromil.

Today the area around Paredes belonged to Aguiar de Sousa, one already on the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal in 1139 existing county. End of the 16th century, parts of the county government moved to the village of Paredes, in particular the hearing room and the prison. Paredes belonged to the Parish Castelões de Cepeda and was on the road, the Porto with Vila Real association. Four monasteries and various noble families had income from local estates. In the course of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 the religious orders were expropriated, and the following administrative reforms created Mouzinho da Silveira 1833/34 by cleavage of the circle Aguiar de Sousa, the independent circles of Baltar, Louredo and Sobrosa. As part of the new restructuring by Manuel da Silva Passos, the circles were disbanded in 1837 and re-created the county Paredes. 1844 was raised Paredes to the small town ( Vila ).

In the second half of the 19th century, the county then experienced some economic growth, particularly under Mayor José Guilherme Pacheco ( 1864-1871 ), who laid a special emphasis on the infrastructure of the circle. In addition to improved road links and the arrival of the railroad and the wealthy Brazilian returnees were a decisive factor in the increasingly industrial development, particularly in the field of woodworking, and there especially in furniture manufacturing, which remained significant even today.

On 20 June 1991 Paredes became a town ( Cidade ). The continuing growth in the county in 2003 led to the collection of places Baltar, CETE, Recarei, Sobreira and Vilela to the city, also Gandra, Lordelo and Rebordosa to the small town were raised.
