Parietaria

Spreading Pellitory ( Parietaria judaica )

The Glass Herb ( Parietaria ) is a plant genus of the family of the Nettle family ( Urticaceae ).

Features

These are annual or perennial herbaceous plants that grow upright or ascending. In general, they reach heights of growth between 20 and 50 cm.

In contrast to most other species of the family, the leaves are alternate on the stem and have a smooth margin. Stinging hairs are absent in the glass herbs. Its leaves and stems are merely covered with short hairs. Stipules they have not. The shape of the leaves is usually ovate or rhombic; their size varies greatly from species to species.

The inconspicuous green or reddish- green flowers are available in hanks or short wrap in the leaf axils. The bracts within this tangle resemble the sepals. There are in the genus both hermaphrodite and getrenntgeschlechtige flowers. The stamens of the male flowers are inside curved in Bloom, by the dust bag can suddenly be thrown outwards.

As fruits ovoid achenes are formed.

Dissemination

The genus is found in the temperate to subtropical areas of the northern hemisphere.

Most species grow to more or less fresh, like something shady waste places. Several species are often found in old walls.

Etymology

The scientific name Parietaria comes from the Latin " paries " ( = wall), " parietarius " ( = from the wall ). It refers to the preferred growing area of some European species, especially of the spread glass herb ( Parietaria judaica ).

The German name " glass herb" comes from the fact that earlier the enamel has mixed the ashes of these plants.

Species

In Central Europe, three glass herb species occur wild:

  • Spreading Pellitory ( Parietaria judaica L.)
  • Pellitory ( Parietaria officinalis L.)
  • Pennsylvania African Pellitory ( Parietaria pensylvanica Muhl. Ex Willd. )

Overall, the genus consists of 20 to 30 species. There are a number of synonyms that are both in use for some species. The following list shows all the synonyms are not resolved, which is why it contains some species more than once. ( List of species in )
