Parium

Parium (Latin Parium ) is an ancient city in Mysia on the southern coast of the Hellespont ( Dardanelles ) in the vicinity of present-day Turkish resort Kemer (Greek: Kamares ).

History

Parium, located between Lampsacus and Priapus in the vicinity of the Cape of Tersana - Bounou, was probably founded by Pariern, hence the name. It belonged to the Delian Confederacy, in the Hellenistic period to the sphere of influence of Lysimachus, and later to the realm of Attalids of Pergamon.

In Roman times Parium was Augustus Colonia Iulia Augusta Pariana.

Church History

The Christian community was, according to the Acts of the Martyrs of the Holy Onesiphoros, allegedly founded before 180 and was originally suffragan of Cyzicus. Since 640, the community was because of their importance Archdiocese and existed as such until the end of the 13th century, when it was collected by the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II to the Metropolitan seat under the name " PEGAE and Parium ". An unnamed unspecified Latin bishop was known in 1209 by Pope Innocent III. appointed. 1354 the metropolis was lifted, her last owner received as compensation the seat of Sozopolis in Thrace.

Today Parium is a Titularerzbistum the Roman Catholic Church.
