Parjanya

Parjanya (Sanskrit पर्जन्य Parjanya m " rain cloud "; Pali:. Pajunna; Ardhamagadhi: Pajanna ) is a Vedic god of rain. In nachvedischer time he was identified with Indra.

The Parjanya are dedicated to three hymns in the Rigveda. He is described as a bull, which refreshes the plants on earth, thus promoting growth. He drives a car aqueous and pouring water from water skins. His rain is accompanied by lightning, thunder and wind. It is often combined with the wind-god Vata called. Once he is called a son of Dyaus.

In Jainism Pajanna is identified with the king of the gods, Sakka, which in turn is equated with Indra.

Also in Sinhalese Buddhism merged Pajunna with Sakka. In the early Middle Ages Podona, the Sinhalese name was venerated in the state cult of Sri Lanka, the cult is true since the Polonnaruwa heyday as passed at the latest.
