Park Won-soon

Park Won -soon ( born March 26, 1956 in Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam- do, South Korea ) is a South Korean human rights activist since 2011 and mayor of the capital Seoul. Previously, he was State and lawyer. Since 2012 he is a member of the Democratic Party.

Studies and career

Park was first approved for study at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Seoul National University, where he studied for a year. Due to the participation in the student movement in 1975 against the dictatorial government of Park Chung -hee, he was expelled. Although his Exmatrikulierung was later reversed, he resumed his studies there not again, but studied at the Dankook University, where in 1979 he received a bachelor's degree in history.

In 1980 he graduated from the State examination in law, and worked at the prosecutor's office in Daegu. From 1982 he made as a lawyer independently and established an institute for historical research. In 1991, he earned a degree in international law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Later he worked as a visiting researcher at Harvard University.

Human rights activist

Park was over 30 years an activist for social justice and human rights. His activism emerged in the late 1970s during his time at the Seoul National University when he protested against the policies of President Park Chung -hee and therefore went to prison four months. This he missed some of his law courses, but still passed the bar exam. After that, he was a human rights lawyer. In 2006, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award, in the category Public Service.

Mayor of Seoul

Park was elected on October 26, 2011 as an independent candidate for the 34th Mayor of Seoul. He was supported by the Democratic Party and the Democratic Workers' Party of Korea. Also the independent politician Ahn Cheol -soo renounced first on its own candidacy and supported him later. On 23 February 2012 entered the park at the United Democratic Party, which was in 2013 renamed the Democratic Party.

On March 26, 2014, the New Political Alliance for Democracy (The New Politics Alliance for Democracy ) was formed by the union of the Democratic Party and the political camp of Ahn Cheol -soo, whose chairman Ahn, together with Kim Han -gil.

Personal

Park is a Buddhist. He is married and has a daughter and a son.
