The Paro Airport ( IATA: PBH, ICAO code: VQPR ) is an airport in Bhutan and also the only international in the country. In addition to the Paro airport, there is also the Yongphulla airport, but not currently driven by passenger aircraft. Paro Airport is located at an altitude of 2236 m in a deep valley (Paro Valley), about 6 km from the town of Paro.

The airport with a 1964 meter long runway (Heading 15/33 ) was formerly used solely of the Bhutanese monopoly airline Drukair, which is both the owners and operators of all facilities. Since August 2010, the Nepalese Buddha Air can serve as a second airline to the airport from Kathmandu.

Druk Airlines maintains its hub here, too.

It has a passenger and a cargo terminal. In the passenger terminal there are four switches and a gate. 2002 37 151 passengers arrived or departed here; the cargo amounted to 90 983 tonnes last.

History

The airport was opened in 1968 in the valley of Paro. He served initially only for occasional flights of Indian helicopters until between 1978 and 1980 various smaller aircraft were tested, which have good maneuverability and should cope with the flight to Calcutta and back without refueling. After the founding of Drukair in 1981 started from 11 February 1983, flight operations with a Do 228-200, twice weekly from Paro to Calcutta. In 1986, a route to Dhaka in Bangladesh to 1987 and to Kathmandu to Delhi in 1988, and in 1989 to Bangkok. In 1990, the start and runway of 1400 m was extended to 1964 m and 1999 a new terminal building opened, which was funded by the Indian government.
