It flows mainly in a north-westerly direction from the Parsnip Glacier in the Misinchinka Ranges for Parsnip Reach of Williston Lake, which was created by the construction of W. - A. - C. Bennett dam and Aufstaus of the Peace River in 1968. Before that led the Parsnip River in the Finlay River to form at Finlay Forks the Peace River, both headwaters of the Peace River along the Rocky Mountain Trench run.

Origin of the name

The river name is derived from the Engl. Word for " acanthus " ( Heracleum lanatum ) from, also known as " Indian rhubarb " is known, which grows along the river bank in abundance.

History

The Parsnip River was formerly of importance, as it represented a portion of the route which Alexander MacKenzie took on his trip to the Pacific Ocean in 1793.

Fish populations and their parasites in the source waters of McGregor River ( Pacific basin ) and the Parsnip River ( catchment area of the Arctic Ocean ) have been the subject of several studies in the 1970s regarding the planned diversion of the waters over the Continental Divide. Three parasites ( Ceratomyxa shasta, Cryptobia salmositica and Haemogregarina irkalukpiki ) were identified as the greatest threat to fish stocks in the area and the downstream -lying areas. The results of these studies were partly responsible for the British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority rejected the plan.
