Part III of the Mathematical Tripos

Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics; abbreviated CASM, on the one hand is the final year of the Mathematical Tripos for students of the University of Cambridge and the other a stand-alone graduate studies for international students selected. Approximately half of the selected participants coming from the United Kingdom, the rest from abroad. CASM is equivalent to a one-year Master's program, and it can be described well better be an excellent and very challenging one-year preparation for a research career in theoretical physics and applied mathematics. Often, the price is also abbreviated as Part III, as it is the third part of the Mathematical Tripos.

The course lasts one year and is divided into three eight-week trimester. This property offers a large selection of lectures on applied and pure mathematics and theoretical physics. The third trimester is primarily intended for testing and repeat the lecture contents of the first two semesters.

In addition to the final examinations, participants also have the opportunity in an essay to provide a portion of the examination.

Part III applies as a recruiting program for PhD students of the DAMTP ( Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics ) from Cambridge. Many universities in the UK and in the U.S. Graduates of Part III are highly sought after as graduate students.

Since October 2010 the successful graduates of the course a master's degree is awarded. Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree from Cambridge University, obtaining a "Master of Mathematics", external candidates ( who were enrolled only for the final year of the Part III) obtained for the same examination a "Master of Advanced Study " ( MASt ).

Graduates of previous vintages, which have acquired a CASM, can also be retroactively granted on application and if other preconditions of each academic degrees.
