Partha Dasgupta

Sir Partha Sarathi Dasgupta ( born November 17, 1942 in Dhaka, then India, now Bangladesh) is an economist.

Life and work

Partha Dasgupta was born as the son of Professor Amiya Dasgupta and Dasgupta Shanti. In 1962, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Delhi. He then went to the University of Cambridge, where in 1965 he received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Ph.D. in 1968 received his doctorate in economics. Until 1971, he still did research at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, before he moved to the London School of Economics. He was from 1971 to 1975 Lecturer, 1975-1978 and Reader 1978-1984 Professor of Economics. Since 1985 he has been a member of St John 's College, professor of economics at the University of Cambridge. 1997 to 2001 he was dean of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science. In addition, he was from 1989 to 1992 Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Stanford University. Guest professorships led him to the Carnegie Mellon University (1968-1969), Delhi School of Economics (1970-1971), Stanford University (1974-1975 and 1983-1984), Jawaharlal Nehru University (1978), University of Delhi (1981 ), Harvard University ( 1987), Princeton University (1988 ), London School of Economics (2003), Cornell University ( 2007 - Andrew D. White Professor -at -Large), University of Copenhagen (2008 - Honorary Professor of Environmental Economics ), University of Manchester (2008 - Professor of environmental and development Economics ).

Dasgupta research in the areas of environmental economics, ecological economics, welfare economics, development economics, resource economics, economics of technological change, population and malnutrition, but also to unemployment, poverty, growth theory, sustainability, game theory, control and trade, justice, and political theory.

In 1968 he married Carol Margaret Meade, the daughter of James Edward Meade. With it, he has a son and two daughters.
