Pascal Collasse

Pascal Collasse ( Colasse, Colase ) ( baptized January 22, 1649 in Reims, † July 17, 1709 in Versailles was a French composer.

After completing his education in Paris, he was a pupil and later secretary of Jean -Baptiste Lully, in 1683 he became music master of the Royal Chapel. However, permission to build an opera house in Lille (1700), brought him no luck. The Opera House was destroyed by fire. The always jealous and very intent on its unique position Lully accused him of having written off in the composition of his operas from him. Disappointed Collasse turned away by the music off and dabbled in alchemy.

Success had Collasse with his instrumental works; his ten operas actually have a great similarity with the works of Lully. The audience preferred the works of Lully.

His main work is considered the Tragédie lyrique called Thétis et Pelée ( " Peleus and Thetis ", 1689 ), to which Fontenelle wrote the text.
