Passi ( officially: City of Passi, Filipino: Lungsod ng Passi, Hiligaynon: Ciudad sang Passi ) is a city in the province of Iloilo on the Philippine island of Panay. The city is geographically the largest city in the province with a total land area of 251.140 km ², which is about 5.39% of the total area of the province. It lies on the rivers and Jaluar Lamunan. The city is known as a center for the production of agricultural products in the region.
Passi City is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in the province. Founded in 1584, the township has already been appointed in 1766 to the pueblo, and consisted of the villages: Buayahon, Alihid -on, lab-on, Bato - bato, Bahi, Lupa and Nalpa. The place, however, was inhabited long before the arrival of the Spanish colonial rulers of Malay migrants. The original inhabitants were called Tinguies de Passi, because of the high number of Negritos and non-Christians in the village.
Kinaray -a is the most commonly spoken language. Hiligaynon, Tagalog and English are also widely understood.
Every year, the Pintados de Pasi Festival is celebrated on March 14 in the city. Many body and animal paintings are executed, as well as organizing a beauty pageant and dance performances. Patron saint of the city is San Guillermo.
Main attractions in the city is the ancient Church of St. William of the Baroque period, the Chameleon Butterfly Farm, the historic Mascuvado Chimney, the Amorotic Caves of Brgy. Magdungao and the vast pineapple plantations.
Sugar cane, rice, pineapple and indigenous textiles are the main products of the economy in Passi City.
Passi City is politically subdivided into 51 barangays.
