Pasteurella multocida

Pasteurella multocida (after Louis Pasteur and from Latin Multus and caedo = much killing ) is the Gram stain -negative, facultative anaerobic and Real bacterium of the family Pasteurellaceae. It is a 0.3 to 1.25 microns long, short rods.

Pasteurella multocida is indole and hydrogen sulfide, which splits lactose and usually causes no hemolysis. After the capsule proteins occurring in the different subtypes can be distinguished. The proven from organ smears and fresh cultures pathogen shows when stained with methylene blue staining of a typical Pole.

Diseases

Pasteurella multocida is responsible for a number of diseases in mammals and birds, which are referred to together with those associated with Mannheimia haemolytica (formerly Pasteurella haemolytica ) infections caused as pasteurellosis. This disease often run. Acute septicemia, as well as infection of the respiratory tract and the gastro -intestinal tract Also, as a secondary pathogen in viral diseases of the respiratory apparatus of the pathogen plays a major role. Although non-specific diseases in humans occur ( zoonosis ), the virulence of the pathogen for humans is low. Human infections are mainly caused by cat bites or scratches. They force due to the sometimes rapid progression to a rapid therapeutic regimen with Benzylpenicillinen (eg, amoxicillin in combination with clavulanic acid ).

Specific diseases caused by Pasteurella multocida are:

  • Wild and mad cow disease (syn. haemorrhagic septicemia of cattle, pasteurellosis of cattle ), acute pasteurellosis of the calf
  • Pasteurellosis of equine
  • Pasteurellosis of pigs (syn. haemorrhagic septicemia in pigs, swine plague, Schweineseptikämie )
  • Pasteurellosis of sheep ( Syn Enzootic pneumonia of sheep, haemorrhagic septicemia of sheep, Schafrotz )
  • Pasteurellosis of the Goat
  • Kaninchenpasteurellose (syn. haemorrhagic septicemia of the rabbit ), rabbit Infectious coryza
  • Pasteurellosis of the guinea pig
  • Fowl cholera ( " Läppchenkrankheit " )
  • Atrophic rhinitis ( " atrophic rhinitis " )

As secondary pathogens Pasteurella multocida plays a role in the

  • Breast disease of the horse
  • Enzootic pneumonia of pigs and calves
