Patient lift

Patient lift, hoist or lifting aids are tools that are used in healthcare to transfer people who are restricted in their mobility.

General design

A manually or electrically operated lifting mechanism is housed, depending on the type of lift at the appropriate location. Depending on the type of lift a cloth seat, a seat or berth of rigid material connected with the lifting device. For performing the horizontal transfer, the device has a swivel arm, a soil suspension or ceiling-mounted rails. There are also differences according to the application context with certain other objects (such as bathtubs ).

The stroke is usually a manual switch to a flexible spiral cable, lateral movements done by rotating by hand. In a purely hand-operated devices, the stroke of a hydraulic pump with hand lever operation or a crank mechanism takes place.

Use, generally

Patient lifts are mainly used in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, residential care facilities and in home care as well as at home. Lifter serve a disabled person to lift and vice versa from a wheelchair out in a chair or on a reclining furniture. The transfer of mostly strong mobility-impaired from the wheelchair to the bed, in the bathtub or on the toilet seat or vice versa, depending on the device typically intended manner. The lifting device is operated by another person, or in some cases also from the disabled user. When inserts by nurses, this is done to avoid back injuries and overloading.
