Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople

Germanos I. (* 650/660; ? † after 730) was dated August 11, 715 to 17 January 730 patriarch of Constantinople Opel.

He was born around 650/660 as a scion of the imperial family herakleianischen and died after the year 730, he was a son of Patrikios Justianos. At the church of St. Sophia, he worked as a cleric. In the year 712 he wrote the Acts of Monothelete ( Monothelitism ) Council of Constantinople Opel ( 680-681 ) against the sixth Ecumenical Synod, however, he distanced himself away again when he became patriarch. He was among the first prominent eunuchs who held such a high office. Germanos occurred, but not vehemently against the opponents of the veneration of icons (see Byzantine Iconoclasm ). When he was unsuccessful, so he put down his office. However, almost only sources of Ikonodulen ( the images supporters ) are obtained. In several letters Germanos did not recognize also that he for the outbreak of iconoclasm, the policy of the Emperor Leo III. directly blamed, as he described the emperor in letters as pious and Christ - loving.
