Patriarch Peter VII of Alexandria

Petros ( Papapetrou ) VII ( born September 3, 1949 in Sichari, Cyprus; † 11 September 2004) was the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria with the official title of the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.

Petros was elected on 18 February 1997 by the Holy Synod and took office on March 9 of the same year. Prior to his election Petros served as deacon and priest. In 1983 he was ordained a bishop. He stood in a close relationship with his predecessor Patriarch Parthenius III. and took over after his death in 1996 his office.

Petros VII died along with 16 other people, including three bishops of the Alexandrian Church, as a helicopter to take him to a visit to Athos crashed over the Aegean Sea.
