Patricio Mariano

Patricio Mariano y Geronimo ( born March 17, 1877 in Manila, † January 28, 1935 in Manila ) was a Filipino playwright, poet, journalist, writer, revolutionary, composer, musician and painter. He was born as the son of Mariano Petronilo and Dionisia Geronimo in Santa Cruz, now a district of Manila and is considered the most important writer, composer and translator of the language of Tagalog in the 20th century in the Philippines.

He received his education at the Ateneo Municipal, Ateneo de Manila University today, and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran. He studied accounting at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Liceo de Manila, Manila Central University today, from.

He joined in 1896 during the Philippine revolution the Katipunan and was trained by Jose Dizon, a former member of La Liga Filipina and a founder of the Katipunan, in the organization. In 1898 he was the right hand of Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, a consultant from the General Emilio Aguinaldo, who later became president. In Malolos, he was editor of the Imprenta de Malolos and wrote as a journalist for the newspaper El Heraldo de la Revolucion and Ang Bayan ng Kaibigan. After the Philippine-American War, he went back to Manila, where he wrote for the periodical newspapers Obreros Los Ang Paggawa, Katwiran, Lunas ng Bayan, El Renacimiento Filipino, La Vanguardia and Taliba.

He wrote mostly symbolic and romantic stories with which he reached the readers of newspapers and a very positive reception. During this time he developed his musical talent, operetta, zarzuela wrote in the Tagalog language and therefore was given the nickname Dean of Tagalogautoren. His works have been premiered at the Sampaguita December 30, 1904 at Zorilla Theater 1901 Anak ng Dagat, Ang Pakakak at the Manila Grand Opera House in 1913 and Ang Silanganan at the Rizal Theater in Tondo. The best known, however, are his translations of José Rizal's Noli Me Tangere socially critical novels and El Filibusterismo and the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti in the language of Tagalog. He has received numerous awards for his work, among other things, by the organizations Union de Artistas, Union de Impresores, Buklod na Ginto, Aklatang Bayan and Lupong Tagapagpalaganap ng Akademya Wikang ng Tagalog. Patricio G. Mariano was co-founder of the Asociacion Pro Patria.

He died on 28 January 1935 in Manila from cancer.
