Patricio Rivas

Patricio Rivas (* 1810 in Rivas (Nicaragua ); † July 12, 1867 in Leon (Nicaragua ) ) was a lawyer and practiced the Office of the Director Supremo ( head of state ) of Nicaragua from August 27 1840 until March 31, 1841 from.

Life

Patricio Rivas was a member of the Partido Legitimista. From 30 June to 27 July 1839 he was appointed to the Dirección Suprema del Estado de Nicaragua ( Cabinet ). In 1840 he was elected Supreme Director.

In 1855 he was employed by William Walker, a puppet as Supremo Director. Background was a peace treaty between Ponciano Corral Acosta of the Partido Legitimista ( Conservador ) and Walker, which of the Partido Demorcratico ( Liberal ) had been engaged. This peace treaty was rejected by the president José María Estrada of the Partido Legitimista. At the beginning of his tenure was supported Patricio Rivas of Walker.

Juan Rafael Mora Porras, the President of Costa Rica, turned against the use of Filibusterpiraten in the Nicaraguan civil war. Beginning in 1856, the government declared under Patricio Rivas Costa Rica the war and the troops from Costa Rica defeated the Filibustiers in the Battle of Santa Rosa and the Second Battle of Rivas.

When presidential candidates were proposed: Rivas, Máximo Jerez Tellería and Trinidad Salazar. None received an absolute majority and it seemed as if Congress would appoint as President of Jerez. But Walker wanted was elected. On May 20, 1856 by Walker regime was recognized by U.S. President Franklin Pierce. Patricio Rivas eluded the tutelage of Filibustiers and moved the seat of government from Granada to Leon ( Nicaragua), where William Walker followed him but in his special warmth in June 1856. Whereupon Patricio Rivas his capital further relocated to Chinandega and enacted a law on the conduct of elections. Whereupon Walker in Granada the dismissal of Patricio Rivas announced and replaced him with the Licenciado Fermin Ferrer.

On June 25, 1856 Patricio Rivas, William Walker declared by law as a traitor and enemy of Nicaragua.

Rivas kept his government in the west of the country, while a little later the troops from Guatemala and El Salvador were who attacked the Filibustiers in Granada and Masaya. The troops from Costa Rica threw the Filibustiers from the basin of the Río San Juan. Walker capitulated on May 1, 1857. On 24 June 1857, the power was taken from a Duumvirat from Tomás Martínez Guerrero and Máximo Jerez Tellería and ended the government of Patricio Rivas.
