Patrick Buchan-Hepburn, 1st Baron Hailes

Patrick George Thomas Buchan - Hepburn, 1st Baron Hailes, GBE, CH ( * April 2, 1901; † 5 November 1974) was the first and only governor-general of the short-lived West Indies Federation.

Born in the United Kingdom, he was one of the personal secretaries of Winston Churchill and a member of the London County Council, before he was elected to Parliament in 1929. In 1939 he was appointed the Conservative Party Whip and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. During World War II he served in the military, but returned in 1945 back into politics and practiced until 1948, the Office of the Deputy Whip and then the Chief Whip made. Between 1951 and 1955 Buchan - Hepburn was also Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury. In 1957 he inherited the title of Baron Hailes was awarded.

As part of the foundation of the West Indies Federation Baron Hailes was appointed on January 3, 1958 Governor General of the country. Its headquarters was located in Port of Spain on the island of Trinidad. As the United States four years later, on 31 May 1962 was disbanded, he returned to England, where he worked as Chairman of the Historic Buildings Council.

Buchan - Hepburn died in 1974 without male descendants. Therefore, the awarded peerage became extinct with his death.
