Patrick Cooney

Patrick " Paddy " Mark Cooney (Irish Pádraig Ó Cuana, born March 2, 1931 in Dublin) is an Irish Fine Gael politician, former Member of the European Parliament and ministers.

Biography

Cooney graduated in law and was followed as a consulting lawyer ( solicitor) operates.

He began his political career as a candidate of the Fine Gael on 14 April 1970, his election to the deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented the constituency until 1977 Longford - Westmeath. After he was not re-elected in 1977 for the Members of the House, followed shortly thereafter he was elected member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ). There he represented until 1981, the interests of the group culture and education. Between 1981 and 1989 he was again as a representative of the constituency of Longford - Westmeath member of the Dáil.

Cooney was appointed on 14 March 1973 as Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave and held that office until the end of Cosgrave reign on 5 July 1977. Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald appointed him between June 1981 and March 1982, the Minister of Transport and Minister for Posts and Telegraphs in his cabinet. After FitzGerald again became Prime Minister on 14 December 1982 called this Cooney of Defence. As part of a cabinet reshuffle he handed over on February 14, 1986, the secretary of defense to the former Minister of Fisheries and Forestry, Paddy O'Toole, as he took over the office of the Minister of Education himself until 10 March 1987.

In 1989, he opted not to run again for the House of Commons after he was elected on 15 June 1989 Member of the European Parliament. The European Parliament he was a member until the end of the parliamentary term in 1994.
