Patrick Kerwin

Patrick Kerwin, PC ( born October 25, 1889 in Sarnia, Ontario, † February 2, 1963 ) was a Canadian judge. He was a member from 1935 until his death in the Supreme Court of Canada, and was its chairman from 1954 ( Chief Justice ).

Biography

Kerwin received his education at the Sarnia Collegiate Institute, after which he studied law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. First, he was an intern in his birthplace Sarnia. When he was admitted to the bar in 1911, he moved to Guelph and worked for 21 years at the firm Guthrie & Guthrie. During this time he was also a solicitor of the city of Guelph and Wellington County and prosecutor. From 1932 he was a judge at the Ontario Supreme Court.

Prime Minister Richard Bedford Bennett appointed Kerwin on July 20, 1935 Supreme Court of Canada. On July 1, 1954 was followed by his promotion to Chief Justice by Prime Minister Louis Saint- Laurent. Kerwin remained until his death in office.
