Patrick Lalor

Patrick " Paddy " Joseph Lalor (Irish Pádraig Ó Leathlobhair, born July 21, 1926) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

Lalor, who was by profession a merchant, began his national political career as a candidate of the Fianna Fáil in 1961 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he claimed four elections for twenty years to 1981, the interests of the constituency Laoighis - represented Offaly.

In 1965 he was appointed by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Seán Lemass to the parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and assumed his first government post. In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Jack Lynch on November 10, 1966 he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Energy and the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs.

Following Prime Minister Lynch appointed him on July 2, 1969 Minister for Posts and Telegraphs. In a cabinet reshuffle, he was then on May 9, 1977 Minister of Industry and Trade in the Cabinet Lynch and remained in this position until the end of his term of office on 14 March 1973.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil, he was appointed on 5 July 1977 by Prime Minister Lynch to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense. After the reorganization of government offices, which led to the creation of the positions of ministers of state, instead of the Parliamentary Secretary, he was last from 1 January 1978 to 1 July 1979 the Prime Minister and Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence.

Following 1979 he was elected a member of the 1st European Parliament and occupied this position after his re- election in 1984 and 1989 in the second and third term until 1994.

In 1981 he renounced because of its membership in the European Parliament on another candidate for the House of Commons.

Paddy Lalor was also active for many years hurling player and won with his team Laois GAA Leinster Senior Hurling 1949 both the Championship and with the team of the Laois Senior Hurling Abbyleix GAA Championship.
