Patrick Suppes ( born March 17, 1922 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States ) is an American philosopher of science. The thinker has, inter alia, the classic post- Tarski representation of the definition of formal definitions developed.

Life

After studying mathematics and philosophy at the University of Oklahoma, Tulsa and Chicago was Suppes Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Stanford, after several stations. He is a representative of model-theoretic point of view in the philosophy of science and has published on the philosophy of mathematics.

Work

Published in 1957 by the philosopher Introduction to Logic as the first volume in a edited by John L. Kelley and Paul R. Halmos introductory series for students of mathematics at undergraduate level. In the first part of the work Suppes developed a definition widely used and, based on performing explanatory theory of formal definitions. Belnaps theory of formal definitions in their historical understanding builds on supples.

History of science, Suppes is zugerechtet along with Nancy Cartwright, Ian Hacking and John Dupre Stanford school in the philosophy of science. This one of the critical approach to the reductionist ideal of unified science.

In 1962 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm (The learning of mathematical concepts ) and held 1999 Tarski Lectures.
