Patrick W. Tompkins

Patrick Watson Tompkins (* 1804 in Kentucky; † May 8, 1853 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician. Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Mississippi in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

The exact date of birth as well as the exact birthplace of Patrick Tompkins are not known. After a rather poor school education, he studied law. Following his admission to the bar he began in Vicksburg to work in his new profession. He was also District Judge.

Politically Tompkins was a member of the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1846, he was elected as its candidate in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he met on March 4, 1847 the successor to the Democrats Robert W. Roberts. Tompkins remained until March 3, 1849, only one term in Congress. During this time he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Navy Department.

After his time in Congress to Tompkins graduated in 1849 at the many emigrants to California, hoping to be there by rich gold discoveries. Patrick Tompkins died in May 1853 in San Francisco and was also buried there.
