Province

Pattani ( in Thai ปัตตานี ) is a city ( thesaban Mueang ) of Pattani Province in Southern Thailand. Pattani is also the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Pattani in the province ( Changwat ) Pattani.

Location

Pattani is located on the Gulf of Thailand in the middle of a fertile basin in the deep south of Thailand. It is about 1050 kilometers from the capital Bangkok. The coast is idyllic and offers beautiful scenery. The hinterland is dominated by the foothills of the Tenasserim mountain range.

Pattani is the center of the Muslims in Thailand.

History

Pattani has been known for over a millennium as a trading center. Since the first acquaintance with the Europeans ( 1509 with the Portuguese) Pattani was the early German -speaking travelers as " Kingdom Pattana " or " Kingdom of Bethany " made ​​known in their home country, transit point for goods to and from Europe. Even with India and China goods were exchanged. The rulers were Muslim Rajas, but most acknowledge the suzerainty of Srivijaya, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. Beginning of the 17th century paid the former " Queen of Bethany ", however, no tribute to the ruler of Ayutthaya, which is why he sent a punitive expedition to the South end of 1624. This corps was then beaten by an army of 3000 Bethaniern, which was supported by six dozen Europeans, especially the Dutch and Portuguese, including the Austrian world traveler and adventurer Christoph Carl Fernberger. The Thai army commander was captured on February 3, 1625. On February 13 there was a temporary peace treaty between the two kingdoms.

1619 a skirmish between the Dutch and British warships took place in the bay in front of Pattani, from which emerged the British as the winner.

At the beginning of the Pacific War Pattani was one of the main landing places of the Japanese conquest of the Malay Peninsula. They landed at dawn on December 8, 1941 without significant resistance and their troops marched from here to the south before.
